Ze Aluminium Analogy

This is Chemistry Philosophy at its finest. Well, perhaps not finest, but it is it nonetheless.

But first, a bit of a background story. This was my instant thought when Sir Shaheer mentioned Aluminium and its Aluminium Oxide layer to us concerning the physical appearance of Al.

But first, a bit of Chemistry 101. Otherwise the brilliance of this analogy won’t be recognized. First, Aluminium is a metal. Basic knowledge, that is. And as a metal, you expect it to be shiny, which it is. Its a shiny silver metal that has luster. But due to Aluminium’s reactivity, it reacts with oxygen present in the air. The product to this is called Aluminium Oxide, Al2O3, and it forms a grey layer on top of all exposed surfaces of the shiny metal. So now there’s a shiny silver metal, with a coat of grey on top of it, encasing it. So, when aluminium reacts with oxygen, it looses it’s initial luster. Make sense so far? Great. If not, go reread it or google it.

Aluminium’s soft, the lab type, and you can slice it with a knife. If you do, you expose the inner shiny metal. The positive (speaking in terms of how the luster represents hope, naivety, pureness. Positive is not in terms of ions here… =P )aluminium, when exposed to the the world, to reality, to the cruelness and harshness of the world, is over powered by it, and soon, very very soon, it looses that luster, and loses that hope. It becomes grey eventually, and inevitably, just as the aluminium on the original outside was. It became just as grey and dull and non-porous as the aluminium (that reacted to form the outer aluminium oxide layer) before it.
