I’m attempting to get better at being flexible with my anime, so I decided that I would try simultaneously to binge a completed anime like Sailor Moon and continue to stay up to date on the current Autumn anime. But then I sorta got into a slump of watching so much Sailor Moon in a go, but there weren’t enough releasing episodes to keep me super interested, soooo I went back to this anime that I had found the picture off of anichart to look interesting!
Now after reading the kikanjuu part of the name, I did admittedly groan internally about this being a cliched military sort of gender bender, buuuut I was pleasantly surprised by the anime’s actual story line!
Hatoru was mistaken as a guy, and didn’t actually try to fool anyone, at least not at first. Still sounds pretty cliched up until now. But the machinegun thing was actually a reference to survival games- combat games where you simulate a real battle but with fake guns that shoot BB pellets. Now that’s a tad unusual, huh?
Through very valiant and idiotic means of avenging her best friend getting supposedly conned by Matsuoka, Hatoru ends up invited to play in the survival games with Matsuoka’s team, Toy Gun Gun. Yes, clearly the name strikes fear straight into any opposing team’s heart.
Though seriously, they ARE pretty dope as a team. Once Yuuki decides Hatoru is worth being friends with and saving. But then they do get to a happy teamwork state, even though Hatoru didn’t want to join at first.
To the point she had to sometimes be kidnapped for tournaments ^_^
Just kidding! But she seriously was for her first one. Way to go, Host-san- kidnapping high schoolers at six in the morning.
Now, Hatoru turns out to have a shit ton of potential for these sort of games, despite being a terrible shot. Her sense of justice keeps her sticking around until she pays off her debt (cliche alert, cliche alert!), but realizes she LOVES the games too much to not return playing them.
Time for some serious conflict~ Introducing Team Hoshishiro, the four time champions of TCG (basically the national tournament for this sport).
They’re super skilled, somewhat creepy, and dang, they like to match! But that isn’t enough for the plot. Oh no. So Midori actually has managed to psychologically traumatize Matsuoka in the past and continues to torture him whenever the two compete on the field against each other. Now that makes for a great story, don’t you think?
Hatoru becomes possessed with the purest form of bloodlust and becomes an egotistical lunatic when she’s in the zone which leads to some pretty fun and intense matches.
All in all, I started and finished it today, and I totallyyyy loved it! I’m on the look out for a season two declaration now :3
(And yes, I realize most of this was a summary instead of me rambling/reacting to what happened, but this feels about right for this anime ^_^ )
Anyhoo, back to a hilarious musical- Star Mu, here I come~!
